    Default And it starts! 52" x 100"

I origionally posted this over on the Kronos forums.

I'm making this thread more for my own amusement, and a time capsule for this build.
And of course for questions that more than likely will arise with the build.

I started in CNC as a personal interest back in about 2004. Discovered CNCZone, and got hooked.
It took a few years, but I finally managed to scrape the time and resources to build a 24"x30" machine. (that build in the the link below)

I introduced a friend to the idea of CNC, and he too got hooked. He bought the plans for the KRMx02 in about 2008 and soon after bought the 80x20 for the base of the machine. Years went by, and every time I ran into him, I would would ask how the build was going... same answer... slow. Fast forward to 2015, and I once again asked and got the same answer... I jokingly said I would finish the build for him... he said, OK. I kinda laughed a little, but about 2 weeks later, I had this in my garage!

Well, I have no idea how long this is going to take me to finish up, its going to be a weekend project, and as you can see, I have ALOTT of shop cleanup and organizing to do.

My shop is only 10' x 24' so space is going to be tight. So I'm googling idea for benches, and have come up with this one, but will be modifying it to allow for more floor space.

So in the next couple weeks, I'll be clearing out the one end of the shop getting ready for the table build.
I'll post back periodically with updates as I progress.

Oh, I have ordered the parts kit from CNC Router Parts. I upgraded the rack and pinion to the Pro version, and skipped the electronics.
I ordered some 570oz/in 5A 3/8" steppers, some 5056 DSP drivers a C11GS BOB and an Ethernet Smooth Stepper, and I'll be using a NUC for the CPU.

    Cheers!
    Chris

Looking forward to your build. Looks like you've built a sturdy table. What kind of parts will you be routing on the table when its finishe? Are you going to keep the table or send it back over to your buddy when completed? Thanks for sharing.

    Default Reality check!

Sorry, That's not my bench, I was just googling ideas for benches.
But now that I have the CNC laid out, I will have to compromise the bench size.
I just need access to the underside for storage.
As my workshop is so small I need to utilize as much space as possible.

Just as a reference check, here is the size envelope!
I have 24" on the left, 12" on the right side and 16" from the back wall.

    Okay, debating the bench height...

Kronos has the 'stock' stand at 34", the machine framework is 12" totaling 46"
    - This seems like it would be a little awkward to prep jobs on the table, as you'd be leaning over the 46" rail.
(If you look at my first post you can see limited space around machine)

I read a few posts here, that its better to go higher (as it allows more storage space under the machine)

I'm thinking of making the stand 28" high for a total height of 40" - This still allows for the vacuum, compressor ect to fit underneath.

I know height is subjective; I'm just short of 6 feet tall.
Any thoughts to the bench height before I start cutting?

I decided on a height of 28" Wood parts cut and ready to be drilled.

I'm using Birch Ply, it was actually on sale the day I went in, then then I got 10% off that.
Three sheets and a new tape measure: $128.00cnd after taxes

Hopefully start drilling today. I only have a hand drill and debating on a drill press (Currently on sale for 60% off)

    Here is an update.
(I've been posting more on the Kronos website)

So this is what happens when you don't really think things through...
I forgot about my space constraints and didn't think about the stand measurements...
I didn't realize till I did this... I stood there scratching my head for a moment
The extra length for the little extension tables... Guess I'll be doing without those.

At least I only had the two done, I'll have to unbolt them, and cut them down to a workable size for my shop.
    Just a small setback though...

So the design calls for 66" beams. (x2)
This makes for a 132" stand. The rails of the CNC are 111"
    I made the beams 55" (x2) making a total 110" stand.
Giving about a 2" overhang on either side of the 3030s.

This fits inside my shop MUCH easier.

P.S. I was also looking at the metal stand, and it doesn't seem to extend past the rails like the wooden was does.

I also received the electronics and motors from automation tech.

Wow, I didn't realize it has been so long... Well, good news is that I have started again... and this is how it sits today.
    Its big. OMG its big!

Not much working space around the machine.
27" on the left, 20" in the back, and 16" to the right.
    - This may shift a little pending machine appendages, LOL.

First picture is of the bench (cross members aren't in yet)
The the extruded aluminum bases, and the rails (semi) bolted into place.
I have yet to level the bed and get everything lined up and trued

I also need to hit the books again to refresh myself with the build...

P.S. on a sad note, it seems like the kronos is a dieing fad now? Not much activity anywhere.

Wow, can time ever get away from you... So much going on in life... good thing this is just a hobby!
Finally got the riser blocks made up.
Need to source some 3/8 bolts, for what ever reason they are not in the kit...?

LOL no promise on the next update!

Got the riser blocks installed... the bed leveled best I could (On a wood floor)
I slide the gantry down the rails

Got the Y rails drilled today as well, but for what ever reason, the 3/8"s carriage bolts weren't supplied with the kit I have.
Have to wait till tomorrow to get out and source some.

    A small update:

Took awhile to get the 5/16-18 carriage bolts! Postage sometime eh?!
So got the Y plates up and in place, and started the Z carrage, only to find out more parts missing!
Sigh... Not sure whether I lost the parts, or they just didn't come with the kit. Either way, I have no
motor mount for the Z motor, and no coupler... So I'm in the process of making the motor mount.
(Thanks cncrounterparts for supplying the CAD files!) I also have a new coupler on order.

Few other glitches where with bolt lengths... I used the 3" supplied, but they were too long and interfered...
so needed to cut them down. And this is how I sit at the end of today.

    Cheers!

I got the Z motor mount made up last night. Still needs to be tapped yet.
I also need to tap the extruded Alum before I can finish putting things together...
Oh, and I need the coupler yet as well... Friday its to arrive.
(And yes, I'll clean up my layout lines before final assembly)

Made a little more progress last night.
Z axis is actually quite heavy. I would like to look into a counterbalance system.

Those constant force clock springs are quite expensive. But if they are worth it, I'll consider one/two for the machine.
Can I get some opinions on them?

P.S. Would something like this work ok?

They aren't worth it. I tried using them to counterbalance the Z axis on a machine I built, and wore them out in a matter of months (they started cracking across their width). Perhaps it had to do with the kind of parts I was making - 3D things with a lot of little Z moves - but I wouldn't recommend using them. I've had better results with gas struts.

Thanks Awerby. Good to know. Did you come up with an alternative solution?

I decided on a couple cheap springs https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B002YGYIGK/...709270_TE_item
They should be good for a cheap short term solution... I'll upgrade that if/when required.

Yes, like I said; gas struts. They work pretty well.

I think that upgrade will be required pretty soon - those springs will cause more problems than they'll solve, since the motors will have to fight with them to go down past a certain point.

I don't think you will like that type of Z axis. I built one similar and it just did not work. It would have needed to have a geared stepper drive in order to be used. The direct drive Nema 23 simply was not strong enough to overcome the dead weight. I wound up just buying a ready made Z axis, but those are pretty simple to build yourself now with off the shelf parts. Much better results and still uses the Nema 23 direct drive.

A little more progress over the last couple of days, but ran into more issues.
Clearances! Bolts not fitting, rack and pinions rubbing against the rails...
And the drive gear of the stepper has to protrude quite far to get the belts aligned.

Hi Leeway, I'll have to deal with this Z axis for now. I'll make modifications as they crop up on me.
I'll be utilizing awerby's advice down the road and use the gas struts to counterbalance the setup.
For now, I just want to get everything that I have put together.

I've also ordered another UC300ETH with the UB1 board with UCCNC.

    Mogul,

Did you resolve the issue where the rack and pinion was rubbing against the rails and bolts not fitting?

    What was the cause?
