    2 vs 3

2 axis is x and y, that is the table moves left and right, front to back. The third axis is generally Z, which moves the quill up and down. 4th would be the table moving up and down, 5th would be the head tilting, and so on.

Here is a nice summary on Majosoft's page: Has pros and cons for you as well

Experience is the BEST Teacher. Is that why it usually arrives in a shower of sparks, flash of light, loud bang, a cloud of smoke, AND -- a BILL to pay? You usually get it -- just after you need it.

    Wouldn't that (4th - axis) be a rotary axis (A)?
