I was able to recently buy an 80's vintage Lagun FTV-2 and I have yet to figure out where the upper Gear Head grease fitting is located. I have found all the other lube points. There is a small hole at the back of the upper gear head - I suspect that there may have been a grease fitting there at one time. I am sure that there are a few people who have had some experience with this model mill. This old Mill is in pretty good condition, and I want to keep up with routine maintenance. I really like the smoothness and the accuracy. I have had a couple of problems with it so far. The brushes and brush housings for the x-Axis power feed had to be replaced on the Servo type 90 and in the process of replacing the brushes and housings, the servo on/off switch came apart. Long story but a short took out the drive SCR's in the unit and one resistor. I was able to replace these and bring the Servo back to life. I have a partial circuit diagram for the lower part of the unit that we reverse engineered. Had to guess at the scr current and voltage requirements. Went with 10 amp SCRs, and 400V. The old DRO still works mostly, I had to use a little windex on the glass encoders or the Y axis would occasionally reset. I need to open that up and see if there is loose debris or wiper material floating around. Seems to be speed sensitive. I |

Found a Instruction Manual on-line, and verified the hole I was focused on was in fact the grease port. I have some Lubriplate B105 Grease on the way. I also have an Variable speed head rebuild kit on the way and I am looking for any "instructions" available on the web, that instruction manual is long on parts list and short on instruction. |

When I bought this Milling machine it had noise in the variable speed head that was one reason I didn't pay much for the machine. I tore it apart last week and replaced the top spindle bearing (7037) with a 6007ZZ and the swag plate bearing 7058 with a 6012zz. While I was in I replaced the glacier bearings and the keys for the variable speed sheaves. I was going to replace the belt but it was good for a few more years and I had some concerns about the model of the replacement belt I bought with a kit. I did open up and clean the Y-axis DRO. I could not see much if any dirt or debris, but cleaning did cure the problem. I cleaned the led/sensor assembly and the glass slide. Evidently the sensitivity to any oil or dirt is very high. Works fine now. My next item to attack is the coolant pump and sump. Looking forward to that activity. |
