z Axis Lead Screw

Here's a photo of the z Axis Lead Screw end.
Is there suppose to have a end bearing or guide.
Or it can be left unsupported?

I'd like to say, I like my K2 CNC Mill.
K2 made me a nice, clean Machine.
Thanks Mike and Ron..

Hey guys,
Nice looking setups.... I have also found on smaller machines they don't support the end of the leadscrew, my sherline is the same way. I think because of the size and the fact that it won't be spinning to fast it does not matter.

However, when I converted my sherline to cnc I did find the Y and X axis leadscrews would whip around and a bearing on the other end would be very helpfull. I have not put one there but plan to "some day."

I see they put a bunch of holes next to the hole cuecaps, probably make the same piece for the upper an lower and that is where the backlash nut gets mounted. If the lead screw is not whipping I don't see it being a problem.

Lead Screw runout

Thanks for your reply Taus,
First.... You got a cool site. You do some mean work.. I salute you.
I was watching the Lead Screw while the machine was in motion and didn't see the Lead Screw running out. (Spinning so slow) The Guide Bars must be holding the alignment.

I believe K2 would have put a bearing assy. in if the Lead Screws were long enough.
I think Mike/K2 might have made the x and z axis lengths a little longer than the KTM7040's original planned sizes, (?),
to provide room for the 4th Axis Sherline Chuck, I guess.

I was planning to make a sleeve type bearing guide(Not roller) using those counterbores and screw holes you noticed. Just to have something there.

I will be posting a photo of my KTM-7040 from K2.
They built me a nice Machine. I'm making a few stuff to bolt on.
Thanks
Alton

Thanks Cuecaps for the nice words. I am updating it with the new bosch mount and some other stuff I have made lately.

I bet they cut the leadscrew to the size you needed for that machine. I agree, a bearing on the other end would be nice. Nice thing is you alreay have the hole and also the screw holes. If you note any whipping at full jog speed than you will want to do that.

Send some more pics in the machine looks great!
