I would like to know if its a good purchase and if I can operate it on another port with a separate controller that I would like to make of course with somes help.(what would I need?)

All the help I can get will be appreciated
    thank you

Once you figure out the interface, surely, an alternate method for "driving" the Sherline stepper could be achieved. Simple step/direction should not be that hard to do - it is done over and over with many aftermarket steppers.
