Newbie - Building the 4X4 - Need Controller Help

I am a total newbie. I did a quick search of this forum and my search criteria was to vague. I need guidance at a step by step type level for the controller system. Any links or tutoring is much appreciated. It is my goal to start putting this thing together over the winter. But the electronics have me totally baffled right now.
