Need Help!- 1/2 8 2-start vs. 1/2 10 5-start

Hi.
I plan on getting started with my joes 2006 build this sommer and am in the process of getting all the hardware together.

My biggest problem right now is deciding on what leadscrews to buy. I´ve seen alot of 2006 builders upgrade theirs leadscrews from 1/2 10 to 1/2 8 2-start. That seems to work but after going through joes 4x4 build I can´t get the 1/2 10 5-start out of my head.

I know joe has more motor power and it takes more torque to turn but how would it work on a joes 2006 with a XYLOTEX 425 oz/in ready kit.

With a little help i was hoping to get my first serious build right on the first time.

Hope this leads you in the right direction and a bit of an understanding, I am still figuring this out and what to use on my build.

I believe that there are some 1/2 10 5 starts out there in joes 2006.
I think I remember that Joes first 4 x 4 prototype he used the HCNC kit and 1/2 10 5 starts, look back in that thread and see.
Since steppers have more torque at low speeds, I think they will work fine. I have 1/2 8 2 starts in my Joes 2006 and they work fine with the 305 motors from HCNC.

"I think they will work fine" is good enough for me. I guess the best way to find out is to try them and see. And that being said i run into my next problem. I´ve tried ordering stuff from mcmaster before and they don´t ship overseas (i´m situated in europe). roton looks very interesting but they don´t seem to sell to individuals. company name is a required field when checking out.

So what would be the next place to look?

They ship to individuals. Try putting "none" for the company name, or give them a call.

thanks for the tip ger21. I tryed it and apparantely it worked. now all i have to do is to wait. I will be posting my findings.

For whatever it is worth... I used the 1/2 x 8 (2 start) Acme rod from McMaster-Carr ... and the matching Anti-Backlash nuts from DumpsterCNC.com

The nuts were a bit tight for my taste.... but now that the machine has run a while, they seem to be fine. I was sorely tempted to buy just the flanged plastic nuts from Roton. They've got some sort of trade name for their two start products (Something like HighLead...???) but I'm pretty sure that their 1/2 x .250 nuts would fit the McMaster-Carr rod.

I think most everybody (and I definitely include myself in this...) OVERTHINKS this lead screw issue.... Buy what you can afford. If it happens to be the high dollar ball screws, more power to you. I went with semi-economy, and it is working great....

I could see big dollars flying out the window and I like yourself try to find a compromise. Thanks for the input.

I just installed 1/2" 5 start with DumpsterCNC nuts on my Joe2006. I'm using the Hobbycnc 305s and the whole thing runs like a dream. I can jog at 320ipm and it moves great.

Right now I am milling a part at 120ipm and haven't had any problems as of yet.

I don't think you would be dissapointed with the 5 start.

I have been leaning towards 5 start. I believe you can get a much more acurate cut with much less lead time.

We are in the process of buying Joes 2006 kit and my son is still leaning towards the 305 motor (kit) from where I am not sure yet. Even 5 start acme costs an arm and a leg in Nova Scotia and any local dealers (all 2 of them) look at me like I got two heads when I first ask. (even the local Fastnal dealer) After some checking on their part they say they can bring it in for a Zillion dollars but can't find the nuts.

Joe's kit will be here in a couple of weeks and will take it one step at a time and with the knowledge base on this site we may turn out a decent machine.
