    1/4" MDF Alternative?

    Hello All,
I have a question for you guys I have not been able to find 1/4" Mdf locally but I did find a place that has 1/4" masonite(peg board with out theholes) if I am not mistaken this stuff is a lot like mdf is it not? Does anyone see any reason I cant use this on the Joe2006 instead of 1/4" MDF?

    Thanks
    Bearwen

    Hi Bearwen

Masonite is HDF (High density fiber), is is a lot harder than MDF. Not familiar with Joe´s design but in principle it shoud work as an alternative

I was recently hunting for 1/4 MDF, and what I found at Home Depot wasn't in the lumber/sheet material section, but rather near the finished shelving material. I suspect it's intended to be used as the back of a shelving unit. One side is covered with white vinyl. The sheet was 49" x 97" (an inch larger than 4'x8'), for about $15. As far as I can tell, it -is- MDF.

The vinyl stuff pulls right off easy enough, leaving a surface that is rougher, not quite like the smooth surface you normally find on MDF, but I just used that surface as the inside of my x-axis box. Seemed to work fine, and that surface probably took the glue better.

you can use 1/2 mdf or other material for the skins the main thing to remember it is a torsion box and gluing the box up provides opposite forces for the top and bottom, others have 1/2" mdf with no problems at all.

As joe said. If you can't find anything local post your city/state ille find you a supplier. MDF is supplied basically everywhere, you might have to just look around in your area for it but it's probably there.
