X - axis very jerky

Need some help on newly finished Joe's 2006.

Everything appears to be running fine using Mach3, 305 oz stepper motors, HobbyCNC pro driver, but!

The x axis has a real whipping problem and a significant stutter when jogging anywhere above 35 ipm. I am using the standard 1/2 10 acme rods with the standard acme nuts configuration but with the spring between the nuts to help prevent backlash. I have also mounted springs on the acme rod ends as suggested in the forum to further correct whipping.

Can the improper tuning of the motors do this?

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Could you be running into a resonance problem? The combination of whipping and/or resonance could probably cause jerkiness.

Resonance

Thanks for the reply,

If this is the case, how do I overcome resonance on this axis?

Bill, here are a couple threads discussing resonance and the simple fixes.

The whipping is not going to be fixed with the resonance dampers so you need to solve that seperately.
