Completed NMTB30 conversion on IH mill

my chinese bearings finally gave up the ghost on my so since i had to pull it apart anyway, i decided to swap to the NMTB 30 spindle i bought from IH about 2 years ago now. anyway, the swap is pretty straight forward other than having to remachine the lower bearing cover to clear the nmtb spindle base. at this stage i don't think i'll be adding drive dogs to this but may in the future. the ultimate goal is to make a tool changer. i think at first i will be starting one that is just mounted to the table. also i have bout a ton of ericson nmtb 30 tool holders really cheaply a while back at an auction so i finally get to use them. i think i need to add a few more to my collection just to round it out, but so far i like the mod. i've just completed breaking in the bearings and will start running some parts on it tomorrow.

also, after completing the spindle break in, my spindle head temp is stabilized at 125°F. i used mobil 1 synthetic grease on the new skf tapered roller bearings. the grease is good up to 300°F. this temp was observed after the spindle ran for an hour cutting at 5000 rpm.

    Runner,
I'm curious as to how long the mobil 1 stays with the bearings ? I tried some wheel bearing grease for a short time and found it ran away from bearings and all dribled out the bottom of the quil in a very short order ! That is when I got the spindle bearing grease from McGuires and it stays put real good, just checked it last week after running for about a yr and it is still where it belongs.
    Good luck

cruiser i have used the mobil one before and found that dripping type greasy mess. i really don't know what thats from as the solids from the grease are still in place. ultimately we will see how long this lasts, if need be i can always switch to wheel bearing grease later.

NO Runner, NOT wheel bearing grease !
There is a grease specifically for spindle drive, I found some at McGuires, a local bearing retailer. Wheel bearing grease is made to run, it runs in the channel around the bearing and lasts because the hub is horizontal. In the case of the spindle, gravity is not our friend.

    bearing numbers??

Runner, I would like to know what bearings you used. I purchased the mill with the #30 spindle and would like to have a set of replacement bearings on hand incase I have a problem.

These are the ones that I used, angular contact, good for 9000 rpm grease, use quality spindle grease. I had to set mine to the third tab past hand tight for preload. Going to a higher quality bearing of BGC 5 or 7 would be a waste of $ in my opinion.

I used new tapered roller bearings in my spindle. probably should have gone with the angular contact bearings but its not a hard swap later. the tapered rollers are 30207M and 30206M. both of the bearings i got were abec 3. i think one cost 14.70 and the other was 17.25, or something like that. i was worried about setting preload on the ac bearings. i am curious as to how you got those bearings to seat cruiser. i had to almost press my bearings into place onto the shaft. this definitely caused a problem on the upper bearing. next time i will get a long tube and seat the bearing first. preload is really hard to identify when your fighting drag from the bearing.

oh yeah just and update on the grease. mobil one definitely lived up to its rep and i've sticky globs falling out of the spindle. i know that i probably over packed them so i'm not worried about it, its just messy.

    Runner,
The bearings fell into place, didn't have to push at all, a bit concered for spin but so far all is fine as frog fur. You might have polished the shaft if yours were tight.
The grease thing is why I came up with the leather seal on the bottom under the threaded shield. Although with the new grease I don't think that it is called for except that the leather seal helps keep coolant flood from washing out the grease.

    Hey Runner and Cruiser,
Could you tell me where you bought your bearings? I'm only finding ABEC-1 or unspecified, and I'd like to go with ABEC-3. The unspecified tolerance tapered roller bearings I've found all had a max speed of 6000RPM with grease. Actually, I did find ABEC-3 angular contact ball bearings at McMaster Carr, but they're ~$60 each.
