    Replacement motor for IH mill

Are there any USA motors that is a direct 'bolt-on' replacement to the IH?

    Anyone have a brand/model number?

    Thanks,
    Tom

    Motors...

I am not sure about the IH but if it is anything like my Lathemaster which is very similar the motor frame is metric. These motors are available here but they are unfortunately more expensive because of this. I believe runner had a post about replacing the main motor with another type that was 3450rpm instead of 1700 and got some more spindle speed out of it as well as a less expensive motor. If I was in the market for a replacement motor( and I am actually) I would get a 3 phase motor and vfd or vector drive to replace the single phase motor with and have more HP and variable speed... Good luck and please post with whatever you end up with so the rest of us can check it out....peace

Surplus Center is a good source for motors.
They have many types, sizes and styles. Most all are brand new with pretty good pricing.

Thanks for the posts. Tommy has a replacement motor coming that will keep me running while I figure out the motor/VFD combo.

Looks like the Leeson 2-1.5hp-kw 3425RPM D90SD Frame 230/460 Volts Leeson Electric Metric Motor # 192074

coupled with the Hitachi SJ200-015NFU2 Sensorless Vector Drive

Seems to be a popular approach. I see I need to have the shaft machined.

There are alot of Allen Bradley 1336 drives on Ebay CHEAP, unfortunately all are 480, 3 phase input. Really nice drives though. Many plants shutdown in these tough economic times that these are coming out of.

I really don't expect to 'ever' convert this machine to CNC, but I machine alot of aluminum and PVC. Just kicking around in my mind whether I should do the 3425 RPM motor or go with the 1700 RPM motor.

    Thanks again,

    Runner,

So did you make both an adaptor plate and a shaft coupler for the 56C? (Haven't researched the dimensions.)

Making an adaptor to mate to more a standard motor frame sure is enticing.

yup i made an adapter plate and a shaft bushing with special key way to make it all work together. if you read through some of my previous posts i do alot of stainless work and steel work with my IH mills. i have this conversion on both my manual mill and my cnc mill and it works just fine.

also you definitely want the higher RPM motor on your mill. there is no reason to get a VFD if your staying manual either. i bought a 56c single phase 220 motor for my manual mill and it works just fine. it a capacitor start motor just like the original but in a much more popular size.

i did go with a 3 phase vfd driven motor for my cnc IH mill though. btw both motors i have are 3 hp and i got them both used off of ebay.

I put a leeson 3hp 3 phase with a automation direct VFD and its nice the shaft on the motor needs to turned down in diameter, I think it needs to be shortened and new slut cut in for key. I had a machinist do that for 20$ .I had to fine tune on my 9x20 lathe. Great upgrade and great power slices thru aluminum like butter.
