Not trying to resurrect an old thread but I've been considering this mod to the IH mill. The adapter plate seems pretty straight forward. My question is regarding the motor adapter bushing. It seems like tedious work to turn the bushing & mill the keyway slot on such a thin piece. Wouldn't an adapter or reducer bushing make things much easier, they can be purchased fairly cheap at Grainger? Thanks to Runner4404spd for posting.

ProGun,
Don't forget, Since the bushing is going to be a rather thin wall AND a KEY WAY !
It may be more prudent, IF you have the ability, To weld and turn the motor shaft end to fit your machine and re-turn it true. I've done many, including extending shafts to make them slightly longer.

Thanks Cruiser. I've found a local Fastenal that carries these bushings as well as 1/4" x 3/16" oversized keystock. I'll try this route first as it seems to be the most simple/cheapest solution & see how it goes.

Thanks for re-opening this, I was about to open a similar topic. After reading everywhere that IH suggested using a D90SD motor as a replacement I picked one up only to discover my IH head is cut for a D80D.

While money is an object, time is a bigger object, I need to get the VFD mounted pronto. I see that Leeson sells adapter plates (Grainger has them for ~$20), but that doesn't fix the spindle size problem.

So my options seem to be:
1) turn down the shaft and make some sort of adapter key.
2) replace the spindle

If #2 is cheap and easy, it's what I'd prefer to do. From what I've read, I can stay with R8 and use something like Tormach's ATC and keep all my original tooling.

The question I have is, how easy is it to go buy a replacement spindle in a larger shaft size? I poked around on the Interwebz and I think I'm searching for the wrong keywords.

the spindle itself doesn't change. the motor mounts to the back of the head and has a unique rotating shaft with a gear on it for an interface. these are most likely machine specific so you either have the machine a new one or modify the one that already exists. also the spindle cartridges for this machine are unique and there is either an R8 option or the nmtb 30 option. neither of which interface to the motor directly so don't need to be changed for a motor swap.

Jet,

I think you mean to say the motor output shaft doesn't fit into the socket on the head?

If so I see an option - build up a spacer to raise the motor and machine an adapter to go from the larger motor shaft to the smaller input shaft. A bit of a kludge but would work. BTW what is the motor shaft diameter on that D90SD?

Or try and trade your motor at a electric motor shop?

Mike

Duh, I'm being a real thinktard about this, it would seem. Instead of taking out all the gears and putting in a direct-drive spindle, I just open up the hole in the gear that the current motor drives.

...and they let me play with class IV lasers. Go figure. :-)

Easier to turn down the new motor rotor shaft to fit the existing IH gear and recut the keyway. I had to rebuild mine some months ago as the whole ned and keyway chipped out. Easy job really. I welded the whole end to build it back to the correct size. Had to get a buddy to cut the keyway with my mill out of commission at the time.
