COnnecting rod bearing

Hello everyone
I have a question about con rod bearings. Can you use a ball bearing on the large end or is heat a factor. I do not think that you could use one on the small side (piston pin) because of heat. Has anyone ever done this. 12cc to 15cc 1" bore 1" stroke.

i dont see why you could not,i know of very large connecting rods using roller or ball bearing configurations.

do a search on 2 piece bearings and you will find more info on this subject

IKO makes caged needle roller connecting rod bearings for both the big end and small end.

Big end bearing bore 8-32 mm bearing od 12-42mm. Small end bearing bore 9-18 mm bearing od 12-23 mm. That's how they're listed in the catalog.

I tried it on my straight 8 project. Bore is .875 and the stroke is 1.0625. Have not started it yet. You can do it if you have the patiance to make, press and align all the sections. 17 pieces, 9 main bearings and 8 rod bearings. It is expensive and hard to get straight. If i had to do it again, it would be one peice with bronze shell bearings. At least now i can say "I did it"

Cheers!

Steve

Knowing the effort it takes to align just one pressed together crank, I take my hat off to you. Amazing work

Here is a picture on the back of issue no. 30 of Strictly I.C.
I never found anywhere where they said how Lew Blackmore did this.
It is really too bad Mr. Blackmore died before he could share this engine with everyone. I remember reading the letters to editor, it was all finished except getting the magnetos working.

WOW
Thanks for all the comments. Steve your a wild man.. Impressive indeed. I wonder what the real design pros and cons are. Things like longevity, friction, etc..

My guess (and that's all it is) is he made the crank small enough to fit through the large main bearings, with each bearing seat spherical (or spherical enough) to allow the bearing to pass around it.
