We are mechanised piercing and cutting some 1" mild steel plate with a 1650. g3 I know its not recommended to pierce but if you had to... Do you have any tips ? We're getting a lot of metal splatter on the shield... this is the worst bit. Thanks |

| Drill pilot holes where your pierce points are. I also use a 1650 and, cut some 20mm plate a couple of years ago, complete with many pierces and, wasted so many consumables, I drew a line in the sand and, now don't pierce anything over 16mm. Mick. Aussie |

| You will not be able to pierce 1" plate with a Powermax1650 without damaging the shield and nozzle. It's maximum pierce capacity is 3/4". Drilling pilot arc holes is the best way to achieve 1" cutting...or edge starting. We normally recommend a 200 Amp plasma for the ability to pierce 1" materials. Jim Colt Hypertherm |

Jim We want to cut a 40mm hole in 25mm plate, we are going to drill a 5mm pilot hole right on the circumference of the circle and start and finish inside the drilled pilot hole... what size hole would you drill ? Is this the best way of doing this ? A boss will be welded in the 40mm hole , so the 5mm hole will be filled with weld. If there's anything left of it ! The hole is over size so some taper isn't going to matter. |

| Any hole larger than about .100" (2.5 mm) will work fine. Make sure the nozzle orifice starts on the edge, make sure you program a pierce delay time to allow the arc to stabilize before movement starts. jim |
