DOA...Hawk 5

Well I got my machine home and found the card holder and power supply in a box as it came back from Hurco, it looks bad, but I am not giving in on it just yet. It is a 1995 Hawk 5 , Ultimax 3 , and with only 789 hours on it....still new. They fixed it but the old owner did not want to pay to fix it, so they swapped out the new parts for the old parts. This is what they said was bad with it:

Replace Old 486 CPU with Advantech CPU and Backplane ( was causing hard drive problems)

Power Supply damaged in shipment

Canbus Controller did not fit tight in new backplane ( original Canbus is not as thick as new one so it was loose in backplane which caused problems)

DSP failed during cycling

Advantech CPU 007-3003-015T

Backplane 415-0166-916

Canbus 415-0605-002T

Power Supply 413-0008-013

DSP 415-0247-007T

That leaves to now finding replacement parts for it. I am just getting started but any direction/guidance would be very appreciated.

I'd be tempted to have a play with it before shelling out a few quid. Stick in a 486DX266 CPU.
Jam in a PC power supply connecting it up as follows:
Yellow wiring in the machine is +5v
Brown wiring is +12v
Orange wiring is -12v

Fit a 24v supply capable of supplying 4A
Blue wiring in the machine is 24v.

The DSP problem could be sorted by cleaning the edge connector or re-seating the EPROMs.

It's worth trying it to see what you get out of it for the price of an old CPU and power supply. You wouldn't need to connect a 24v supply to run it up on a bench.

Thanks for the ideas. We did the PC power supply in the Hurco here at work too, works great for cheap. Already found a PCU and power supply....might be Monday night before I change it all out and clean the DSP board. I think it was the DSP board that originally gave them problems - is this the display board? If I can get 3 of the 4 problems fixed, might not be so scared it have the DSP board fixed if it is bad. Thank you again!!!

The DSP is the long card that is connected to the outside world with the 40 way ribbon cable. It controls the axis movement.

Sounds good, I am going to look at it tomorrow night. I have a power supply and a CPU (not 100% sure if it the right one) and going to look at everything then. Thanks for the ideas!!!
