Problem- manual axis jog

I have a BMC 20 with a ultimax 3 control. Sometimes when I switch the machine on, the buttons on the remote axis jog unit don't work and so I can't move the machine manualy, for part and tool setups etc. I can still run a program though that was setup before the machine was turned off so it's nothing to do with the X,Y,Z axis themselves. I know everyone's going to say "don't turn it off, best to leave it switched on". I don't use this machine often enough to keep it like that. It can sometimes be a month in between jobs on this machine. When this happens, if I switch it off and then back on again it works ok. Any ideas?

I have a large gantry machine, came today, powered it up, and jog acts funny.
I use the keyboard arrows, and I can jog one axis of my choice, for a short distance, or sometimes, I leave the key on the keyboard and it keeps jogging as if I still press it.

Other functionality seems to work, I can run ladder programs, and I can run and pause code. just jogging is a problem.

B.T.W: using AXIS UI to jog works fine, select an axis, press + or - and it jogs great. just keyboard demonstrates the problems.
