X axis encoder fault/smoke

I have a 1991 BMC-20 that has been upgraded to Max-32 by a previous owner. Tonight while running the machine I got an x axis encoder fault then smelled the famous burnt electrical smell. When i opened up the cabinet smoke was rolling out of it, but i could not pinpoint the exact location is was comming from. I think i might have been comming from the X axis amp. Any suggestions and does any one have a clue as to how much $$ i am about to shell out to get this resolved. Thanks ahead of time.

After getting some time to look at the machine I found I have a burnt suppresor board. Does any one have any suggestions as to what would cause this. I am not an electronics type person but I am assuming this board did its job and stopped any further problems. I am running the machine off of a 3 phase rotary converter.

Buy me a Beer?

Suppressors as the board says, looks like a raft of R/C suppressors, these are often used across AC inductive devices such as contactor coils etc.
They rarely fail unless an extremely large voltage is imposed across them.
It is strange to see a bunch together on a board, they are usually places at the inductance source.
You could have had a high voltage arc over to get that damage.
They are common items and if they have the values on them, you can even make one up.
Al.

Flip the board, trace the tracks and re-wire it to connect the unused suppressors instead. Failing that, scrap the board and buy a potted 3 phase suppressor for each contactor in circuit.

First would like to say thanks to Al and Bloke for the answers. I ended up replacing the "smoked" board with some Electrocubes. It appears that went the board blew up, some debris from it landed in on my x drive which sits directly below and fried it as a result. After getting a new drive from Buddy at the hurcostore and Accurate Machine Tool service, I am up and running again. I just thought I would pass along some PDFs I found in my searches for a solution. Lonnie and Don at Hurco were also good helping hands in my search for a solution.
