You shouldn't have to peck tap. Are you using the rigid tap function? I am at home and can't remember which cycle I normally use. I know that I usually run the taps all the way down without pecking it. I do sometimes use peck when I am tapping stainless or other hard materials. I will try and look tomorrow to see what I use and post it tomorrow night.

You dont need to peck at all, but I usually do if using a turbo tap in a really deep hole, usually in dead soft aluminum like 6061. The chips will break off easier and if the don't you have the option to throw it in feed hold and remove them B4 heading back down the hole.
Form taps in hard or gummy material like to take a breather and a drink of cooland also.

I have found peck tapping to be useful when tapping deep blind holes with spiral flute taps (the type that pulls the chip up) to help prevent the tap from breaking from the chips jamming up the flutes.

Yeah those are the taps that I called turbo taps in my last post, spiral flutes like a drill.
Gotta peck those if you are going to slam the tap all the way to the bottom of the hole.
The friction from tapping, even with good coolant, will cause them to twist a bit and they will snap in a hurry if the chips get bound up. A regular sprial tap is just driving chips to the bottom of the hole and if you don't peck you have a long curly cue that will snap a tap or bind it in the bottom. Pecking breaks the chips into little bits that will fall to the botom and some will be flushed out on retract.

Yup, what he said, only for rigid tapping. I don't even believe you have the option without the "rigid tap" option on your control. Some users run their floating tap holders when rigid tapping, it is not necessary, and I bet you wouldn't want to peck with this style holder. It would work but the constant reversal will wear it out a bit faster. We run all of ours in collet holders, nothing fancy, just use the correct size collet and run it.
