Can you be a bit more specific about the control not starting? It could be anything from swarf on the CRT controller or Cable connect PCB in the control console through to memory issues.
A bit more detail could be really useful.
Just purchased a mid 80's MD-1, fired it up, put a program in and the controller froze up, restarted the machine and now the controller is not working, seems to come and go, checked for any loose boards, didn't come up with anything. This is my first Hurco, need some direction. Thanks

The controller powers up, but the display is intermitten, seems if you shake the keyboard that the control will come to life for a bit, and then will blank out or have a bunch of amber colored spots on it. I am guessing a loose connection wondering where to start. Thanks,
In the console, there is a small board under the keyboard (not the front board - that's the cable connect) about 8" by 6". Check that this has no swarf on it and that all the connectors are clean and well seated.
Checked the connections and the board everything looks fine. Turned the machine back on. Now the left screen is mostly orange with flashing symbols and text.
By the sounds of it, it may be the memory on the CRT controller playing up. When I'm back in the office tomorrow, I'll tell you which chip it is. Failing that, you'll probably need a new CRT controller. You could try unplugging the cable on the left hand end of the board (the one that connects directly to the edge of the board) and see if it starts with just a cursor in the bottom left hand corner. If it does, post back...
I unplugged said cable and yes it starts up just with the blinking cursor.
Aha! It may be the CPU feeding the CRT controller with garbage then. Have you removed it to check it is clean? It's the only board in the card rack that has an edge connector like the one on the CRT controller.
Another thing to try is remove the memory board (short board with EPROMS) and power it up to see if the garbage on the display is still there. (If just the cursor again, it may narrow it to the memory card.
Is it possible that the switches on the memory have been disturbed?
I checked the cpu. its clean and the cable is well connected. about the memory where is that usually located. I looked but didnt see any short boards.
It's the board behind the CPU in the slot next to the first tall board (personality card).
You may or may not have a disk controller board in the slot directly behind the CPU.
I removed the memory board. Looks fine. Turned the power on with the board out and the left screen displayed only the blinking cursor in the bottom left. Right screen diplays nothing. I dont know if somehow the switches on the memory board got messed up, I know I didnt touch them. Right now switch one is all closed. Switch two number 3 is open. Switch three 1 and 2 are open. And switch four has 1 2 3 4 open.
Switches are ok.
Does your board have bateries down the front edge (AA sized lithium 3.6v) or the chunky looking Dallas RAMs in the centre of the board?
If it's the Dallas RAMs, swap the left two with the right two to see if a change happens in startup. It may also have a badly seated EPROM (U65 to U72) which would benefit from lifting and re-seating.
If it has the batteries, remove the jumpers above the batteries at the same time and re-mount them to clear the (possibly corrupted) memory.
