Hurco Hawk installation disks query

Hi,
I am trying to get a Hurco Hawk (1995) which was running OK until it was moved between workshops. The problem is that the hard drive is not being recognised by the BIOS (Seagate ST3630A 631MB). I removed the drive and fitted to another PC but still not recognised. I obtained another drive (same model and capacity, firmware etc) and swapped the controller card which is attached to the back of the drive. I can now plug the drive onto my desktop PC and it is recognised by the BIOS. (also the Hurco BIOS) the EXECUTIVE_1 and PART_PROGS partitions are still there and I managed to copy the files off the drive. When I put the drive back in the Hurco it will not boot up. I assume it is because of the way the files are set up on the drive. On another thread on this forum there is a good description of how this is done using the original installation disks by user 'Bloke'. I have three Hurco floppy disks in a black Hurco folder - Ultimax3 V1.52 Disk 1 &2 and V1.52 Machine Configuration Disk 1.
There appears to be a disk missing (utility disk?) which is necessary in order to make the hard drive bootable again.
Can anyone enlighten me as to where I might obtain such a disk or is it not that simple.
Regards
George

Alrighty then. You'll need to check the bios settings in the Hurco pc by plugging in a keyboard (either under the control if the socket has been wired or into the socket directly on the motherboard).
they are normally:
1024 cyl
16 heads
65535 wpcom
1024 lzone
50 sect

see how that goes. If no joy, post back....

Hi
I have set the drive BIOS settings as per the data on the drive which for a Seagate ST3630A are as follows
1223 cyl
16 heads
63 sectors

The auto drive detect 'Bios feature' detects it as the above but I will try manually changing the settings in the BIOS as you have suggested.
Thanks

Hi
I have tried the HDD BIOS setting you suggested and now have the error message 'error loading operating system' which is an improvement over the auto detected settings which gave no error message at all. The active partition is set to the EXECUTIVE partition.
Any thoughts?

OK. Try this then.
Make a copy of your disk 2. With the copy, delete all the files except EXECPROG.002 and LEAD_DE.LAN
Then copy the contents of your config disk to disk 2. Be sure to keep stuff in it's directories.
Next, put disk 1 in the control and power it up. It should load disk 1 then ask for disk 2. Put this in when prompted.
If the software starts ok, go to auxilliary and press "UPGRADE EXECUTIVE". It should copy the contents of disk 1 to the hard drive then ask for disk 2. When it's finished, re-boot it and see if your error has gone.

Hi,
I have tried as you suggest but when I put in the second floppy disk I get
a 'Error 244 invalid disk volume' message and I can go no further.
Any thoughts?

Stick the disk in a PC, right click on the A: drive icon and select Properties. Next, rename the disk EXECUTIVE_2 and apply. Run the load thing again.

It sounds as if your CPU may be bad. If you found an old 486 DX2 66Mhz ISA cpu card, you could fit that in your rack and see if the fault disappears. Alternatively, ask Hurco to check your drive for you.
Whereabouts in the UK are you?

Hi
There is a reason why I know the CPU is not bad which relates to the use of another drive from a different Hawk machine (same type 5M) which has a different problem with its dongle not being recognized. I was/am hoping to get the first machine running in order to troubleshoot the dongle problem in the second.
I am in Glasgow.
I will PM you with some background.
