Newbie- HobbyCNC EZ board - Power Supplies

Hey,

Am thinking of buying the hobbycnc ez board, but dont know what power supply i will need. The motors are rated at 2.8V; 2.8A. I would like a supply that i can just connect and it will work!!

Would a 350W 24V 14.6A Switching Power Supply be ok to run the 3 motors, or would it be too much???

Can some one help.

Hi,

Welcome to the Zone.

A power supply that puts out 35 to 40 volts would be a giant improvement!

a 24 volt power supply is going to cost you almost 50 percent of your power.

Seven amps will be sufficient for three steppers.

HobbyCNC has plans to make an analog power supply that is pretty easy and works well. They specify a specific transformer (24V 10A secondary) and a full wave bridge rectifier, add a good filter capacitor, (and fuses and power switches) and it just works.

It is EASY to build, but does require soldering, and it works VERY well. Once it comes out of the full wave bridge it is 32VDC at 10A.

To answer the question you asked (rather than the answer I gave ... Yes. That power supply would work.

The higher voltage within specifications allowed will give you better response from your steppers.

(Yes, I have an older HobbyCNC board and use their power supply. It all works well.)

So going with a 36V 8.8 Supply over a 24V.

Would i have to put any resistors or anything in between the power supply and board to prevent 'frying' the board or could i just connect directly.
