Problem- Sparks HobbyCNC Pro Cant Be Good

I built my board a while ago and had problems finding a suitable power supply.

I finnaly got an AT Power Supply that i could get an output of 15V 20A from. I connected this to the board, and i got sparks and lots of smoke from the X driver chip.

I disconnected the power supply. and then connected it back up with 12V 9.5A as i used for the test.

I then checked the test again. I'm still getting 5V at the test pad, but X-pad is giving out 0.15V constant and not changing, is it repairable???

What went wrong.

This wouldn't be the driver board kit you claimed you never rec'd is it?

but it says in http://www.hobbycnc.com/products/hob...er-board-kits/ that,

# 42VDC maximum input voltage, 12VDC minimum input voltage. 24VDC Minimum Recommended Voltage.
# 3.0 Amps Maximum per Phase, 500ma (.5A) minimum. Each axis adjustable throughout this range.

you should have tried a suitable power supply.

I've been reading this forum here for a couple days, and just kind of seeing what probs people are having with the HobbyCNC kits. Seems most have problems when they do stupid stuff. But this particular thread had me in stitches!

a kind of a " D'OH! " - type of thing...

BTW - I got an EZ board, 305 oz steppers and the Triac voltage reg, and the pactec DM-4 case.. Got everything I need, except heat sink compound - which I have to order online cuz my town doesn't have it anywhere!!!!!!!!!!!

Buy a different board! Doesnt work, poor packaging, missing parts, owner of this home based company is hard to work with. I regret throwing my money away on this junk!

Guys,
Dave at hobby cnc is a good person. I have bought 4+ kits from them so far and the only problem that I had was a missing resistor. He sent it out to me with no questions asked. I bet he deals with a ton of people on a daily bases with something stupid that they have done to their board. Read some of the above posts.
People do have their opinions though.

I agree. I recently Emailed him about information on how to interface his boards through the parallel port - what commands selected what axis, etc. He stated he had NO IDEA. How in the WORLD can he have NO IDEA on how to interface to one of his boards? If that were even possible HOW THE HECK does he expect others to know? The email response from him made me feel like his operation is a scam like that CNCBridges operation, I just really can't believe that he would have no clue on how to interface with one of his boards. Unbelieveable!

It has been a beef of mine for a while on the question of BOB manufactures interfacing documentation, many offer nice interfacing diagrams for their product but do not actually show the actual nature of the input and output electronic characteristics, this is OK when standard components are used as per the BOB documentation, but if as many have on the different forums here, attempted to use other various forms of components, they often have run into problems due to either not being able to make an intelligent decision as to whether the component in question will work, or pose a question in a forum where it is difficult to answer for the same reason of not knowing the exact nature of the interface.
With much of the industrial equipment I use, I am used to having the documentation describing the nature and technical requirements of the respective inputs and outputs.
It can get frustrating when it is required to reverse-engineer a product in order to use it.
