Hello, I have a problem I can't seem to figure out. I have a Hobbycnc pro board that has been working fine. I had my z axix stepper quit running properly and I came to the conclusion the stepper was basically going south. It was a 6 wire 4 ph .77 amp 7.6 volt stepper. I have replaced it with a 5 wire 8v 1.2 amp stepper. I did the proper adjustment on the board for the amp, I actually set it a .14 so as to only get 1 amp to the stepper. Here's the problem, the new stepper gets too hot to touch and tonight it stopped working. It says it is thermally protected so I hope it just tripped the internal reset. But that being said, what am I missing here? Any idea why this stepper is becoming too hot to handle? The stepper I removed was not getting too hot. The new stepper is a Shinano Kenshi 127K94840 STH-54D403 are the numbers on it. I can't seem to find any info on it. Anyone got any bright ideas or even not so bright? I must be overlooking something! Thanks for your help Ron |

| Sounds like some wires crossed up. Make sure the phases are not fighting each other. Ideally you should find a stepper exactly the same spec to test the driver board. I presume the new one is the same number of phases? If you still have troubles then at least you know it is a driver board problem and perhaps not the stepper. |

| Hi, again Could not find a exact match to change to, that would be too easy. The new stepper ran really well until it stopped. No hint of any problem other than it gets way too hot. I'll recheck wiring tomorrow to be sure, thanks for the reply. Number of phases could be it. the old one was 4 the new one does not tell me. I thought almost all 5 and six wire steppers were 4 ph? Any wisdom on how to check to see number of phases? Ron Last edited by foamcutter; 03-08-2010 at 08:39 PM. |
