I am having the same issue as well on my lathe. I am thinking about upgrading to the bigger motors.
I’m using mach3 with hobbycnc board. I have the 23/205 steppers from hobbycnc and sometimes the motor do a strange noice and don’t move for like 1 sec or micro sec while running a program. That is a huge problem because is damaging my work.
I believe is the setup I use on the Speed/Acceleration. Right now I have:
Vel=10 and
acc = 2.5
And stills do the same thing but not that often
Is there any recommended Vel/Acc for those steppers?
I check my table and is moving really good + I put grease on all the guides and screws.
Thanks for the help,
Jose

Your motors are loosing steps for one or more of several reasons. You can do an air cut and try to hold one of the lead screws to duplicate the sound and lost motion that you describe.

What voltage, what drives, and what screws are you using?
