What size motors?
If I recall, when a lot of people were building Joes 2006 machine, they were getting about 100ipm with 1/2-10 single start acme, and 300oz motors. That's about 1000 rpm at the motor.
I'm getting about 25 inches per minute with 5/16-18 screws, with 200 step/rev Nema 23 motors at 36 volts?

I have
- HobbyCNC Pro (same driver chips).
- 1/4-20 drive screw
- 36V unregulated linear power supply
- 300oz in motors
- 1/2 microstepping
I can push it to 40ipm, but that's pretty much it. For milling, I will go to 38 ipm max, typically 30 - 35 (material dependent, of course)
I only have a home-made DIY hobby machine, and for a 20 thread-per-inch drive screw, 38 ipm is pretty respectable.
You can do the math to figure out the steps per second.

I have a HobbyCNC Pro and a 48V power supply. I forget what the microstepping is set to, but doubt that it would limit the max speed as long as the PC can keep up. I am using a 10 year old XP computer with a parallel port.
My original router build had 10TPI ACME screws driven by 425oz motors. I could sometimes get 60ipm and would typically cut at 30-40ipm. Every once in a while it will stall and ruin the job.
I switched to Ebay rolled ballscrews with 0.5cm threads, so effectively 5.08TPI. I could easily get over 100ipm and never felt the need to check the maximum speed. I usually cut at 60ipm and have never stalled the motors.
