pen making stuff

my son wants to start making his own wooden pens which will be a great thing for us to work on together , ive managed to find a couple sites that sell the guts for them but most sites want to sell a complete kit , which sort of defeats the purpose of trying to get him some hands on knowledge
if anyone can offer up some supply links or offer some pointers we would much appreciate it
