CNC able to make this?

Hi! Great pile of info here! I am new to CNC but I am really wanting to get into this sometime soon. I was wondering if you CNC experts could tell me if it would be tough to make one of these out of a solid piece of PVC block:

It's a basic venturi valve but I need one that's bigger with a bigger hose barb for larger diameter tubing. It would be 1 3/8" in diameter at it's widest point.....Any ideas?

Why does it have to be one piece?? It's possible I guess but probably not worth the fixturing and setups. (You need to ask someone familiar with PVC, I'm just talking about geometry.) You can see parting line on the part, so it was molded with a couple of cams on the ends. Is there any reason it couldn't be built out of aluminum and the little detail carefully welded on?? I'm sure someone will have a cnc lathe with live tooling or something similar and could whip it out in short order. Quantity would definitely be in your favor as far as an order goes. If it's just a 'one-off' I think the price will blow your mind. Let us know how you finally get it made. It's not something I would personally want to mess with unless it was for one of my buddies, lol...

Good luck,

Carl

that looks like a good candidate for a cheap injection mold by CNC in aluminum.

Oh, whoa, I just looked at the website, lol, disregard my post!! I thought this was for something completely different, I think you'll do better retrofitting something else to your skimmer. Forget what I said, lol, I understand now~ I agree with CGZ... I'd do an aluminum prototype with a couple of handloads instead of cams...

That is the route I figured I would probably have to go...Any ideas on how to go about this? Here's a drawing of what I actually want to make. It's basically an EL fitting that fits 1" pvc fittings with venturi valve internals....

Seems that ReefCentral doesn't like people hotlinking to their images.

If it is an image you have the rights to, you can upload it to CNCZone and display it that way.

Geof will become famous soon enough

Just a comment on your design, not how to make it. Putting a venturi immediately adjacent to an elbow like that as you have shownit is likely to kill the efficiency of your venturi. I think you will need to rework the internal profile so that the transition from 1" to 5/8" takes place ahead of the elbow.

For making your prototypes I suggest you consider splitting it into two pieces lengthways with the side spigot a separate piece glued in when you join the halves.

How about this?

I'm still fooling around with 3D software to pigure out how to model this for routing Any ideas?

If you can extend your part as drawn why not do this? It dramatically reduces the diffucylty of making a single piece.

That's a good idea and was my second option...I was just thinking of attempting a sigle piece...I guess it would be easier to do just the venturi by itself huh? I'm definately open to thet :-) Would it be tough to to a 3D drawing in Alibre for that?

I have made similar parts by starting with a standard elbow. I machine a venturi and fasten usually glue it into the fitting. I then thread or glue the barb or port on the assembly. Last I drill the intersecting hole. I am bob@advanced-grinding.com 502-452-9851 I can make these.
