Hello everyone! I've been browsing this site for a few months now just looking for some helpful information on CNC machinery and their inner workings, and now that I have an idea in my head for a CNC pickup winder I'd like to share the build and get as much help as I could with it. I'm very new to CNC machines (I don't own one, so my knowledge is VERY limited) and I've got some electronics background, but not enough to figure this all out on my own.
So I know that others have posted their ideas for pickup winders on here before (one quite recently, actually) but I'm in the mindset to start from scratch and not really look at or try to modify someone else's design. To put it simply, I don't want links to another pickup winder with a comment of "Here, just do this." I would like to get as much help as I can on this build from all of you genius builders so that we can come up with a whole new design that you won't find anywhere else. And I'm up for anything as long as I can afford it (be warned, as a college student supporting myself, I can't afford much!).
SO! On to what I have so far in the design concepts.
I want this machine to be easily programmable. I've done my research, and though using regular CNC interfaces is always an option (G-Code through Mach3 kind of stuff) I'd really like some help trying to adapt an Arduino based controller to do the job. I like the idea of having it be programmable and free running (as in once the programs are set it no longer needs to be hooked up to a computer). And if the winder is able to be free standing I'd like to have a 10-digit keypad with each key able to preset to a programmed wind (hot-wound humbucker, Strat single coil, etc.).
Also, I want the winder to be able to wind at 1000+ turns a minute if possible, with a slow start and slow end (no breakage). I really don't know if stepper motors are capable of this or if there are other controllable motors that could match that speed.
Another little thing I'd like some help with is designing an adjustable wire tensioner for this winder so I can set the correct tension for different gauges of wire. I have no experience with this and would really be grateful for some helpful input.
I'd like to emphasize that I really have NO experience with CNC or Arduino, so if any of my ideas aren't possible please help me straighten it all out.
Thanks in advance for all your help!
... Booya.
