I hope this forum is appropriate for this topic. I am hoping to use my CNC Gantry to manufacture the furniture so it IS CNC related. I consider tinkering and inventing to be my hobby. What I am interested in is creating some industrial themed or even post-apocalyptic furniture and other "decorations" for my "man cave". I hate to call them "decorations" because that just sounds fruity. I like things that serve an aesthetic function, but also have some purpose as well. I'm not the most artistically creative person and have significant difficulty coming up with initial ideas, so I'm hoping someone will have some suggestions. I figured I'd start off with a "coffee table". I thought I'd start off with some plain steel sheet metal and use a cutting torch to create some roughly cut edges and some rough small "rust holes" intermittently in the surface. Rough in appearance only of course since I have young children that will periodically visit the "cave" I'm sure. I'd like to incorporate some type of unique features. Exactly WHAT features, I have no idea. I'm a tinkerer and inventor at heart and I just want to make the furniture I create unique and impressive at the same time. While I am not artistically creative I am extremely good at mechanical things. So the big problem is just visualizing the table from an artistic point of view. Implementing the mechanical/technical stuff will be much easier for me. I'd love to hear suggestions.

| Let your imagination go wild (or industrial in this case). I have done a lot of out of the box furniture. Here is a man cave coffee table that I did for a client. I was commissioned to design features for his garage that would make it the perfect man cave to hang out with his friends and talk about gear head topics. He owns a Ferrari Testarossa, so I designed this gear coffee table with the outside gears to match the wheels on his car. You can reach under the glass spin the gears. I used Afromosia and highly figured African Mahogany for the table. The table has a water jet cut glass top, 1/2" thick. There was about 240 hours of work in this project. Here is a link to my video showcase if you want to see more; Animoto - Shane McKenna Engineer - Designer - Artist - Craftsman My advice is to look at the things that excite you for inspiration. Don't place any limits on what can or cannot see being able to accomplish. Leave all of the options on the table and continue to focus on the end result. With imagination, desire and time you can create anything. |

| Thanks for the link and info. Seems like unless I have something to look at and pattern after, what I visualize never seems to actualize. In other words, it ain't gonna look like what I want it to look like :-). I'll have to keep looking for something similar to what I want.

When it comes to furniture I am very picky and I have to get the best quality that is out there. I feel there are only a few places that offer the best quality in industrial furniture. This place is for sure one of the best. Last edited by bjackson1; 05-13-2011 at 12:22 PM. |
