    Cool Which material for BEARING

    Hello,

I am designing a PLAIN BEARING arrangement. The shaft oscillates in a PLAIN bearing. A load of 0.5N is applied onto the shaft. The load is not continoous....May be once in 30 minutes. I am not in a favour of lubricating the shaft-bearing arrangement because of some environmental reasons.

Hence, I am confused while selecting the BEARING MATERIAL....

I know that Babbit, Bronze are such materials avaliable but the problem with that it doesn't have a WEAR RESISITANT Ability. These materials do wear easily.

Shall I use hard materials for SHAFT-BEARING ? I would select SHAFT of OHNS material (58-60HRC). But what should be the Bearing Material...Shall I use some hardened Steel in EN series like EN19 which will avoid wear of the shaft & bearing & will function properly for a long period of time.

Please let me know your comments.
    Thanks
    Ash

Ash, There are wear resistant Bronze materials. Some have graphite or "Teflon" embedded in them. Many steel mill roll bearings are made of bearing bronze.

Try to "google" Rowend industries inc. Good info in their catalogue.

Also, there are many "plastic" bearings as well IGUS and SAINT-GOBAIN for example.

    Hi,

Thanks for the reply....But why BRONZE material is favourable.

Why not use the shaft as well as bearing of a hardened steel (58HRC) ?

    Thanks

    Also,

Normally a Bearing is stationery & the shaft is rotating....We normally used hardened shaft & bronze bearings.

But if in my application, the shaft is stationery & the bearing is rotating....

So, shall I swap the material...In short, shall i used a hardened material for bearing (which is rotating) & bronze shaft (which is stationery).

    Thanks
    Ash

An Aluminum Bronze bearing with Teflon type plugs or strips in them do not require additional lubrication. There are other bronze alloys that will work as well.

I'd use them in the moving part and have the shaft part made of highly polished hardened steel.
