need a small machine. so i bought a big machine :D

SOOO...i want to build my self a high speed machine for doing AL. Well, im not gonna pay someone to do what i can do myself, so i decide to buy myself a mill...and its a big one ill use this to machine all my parts for a smaller machine for making pistons on a 4 (hopefully 5) axis DIY machine. i plan on cannibalizing the servos and controllers from this one for the new one, once i get to that stage, then ill prolly scrap this. (unless it holds a nice tolerance then ill keep it and name it the "HOG" ) this one is equipped with a hydraulic spindle chiller, but the only problem i have with it, is that its only 3500 rpm. im not sure if pulleys can be changed, ill have a look when it gets here. Im leaning towards keeping it though due to the tool changer..If anyone knows anything about this machine, give me a shout!

orders of business
1) Get it to NC
2) Find a spot for it (I have several locations as alternates if i cant get it in my home shop, 12 foot ceilings there, hope they are enough)
3) get power to it.... depending on where it goes, that calls for a transformer or a transformer/rotary combo
4) check all the tolerances and run outs
5) make my AL peices for my High SPeed machine

6A) Tear big boy apart and cannibalize parts
6B) Upgrade the spindle somehow and keep it.

Nice Iron.

And you hit it on the head. Those Toyoda Mills are great beasts but they tend to be slow, 4000 or less.

Back 15-20 years ago that was just fine for alloy steels and larger tools in high nickle iron.

Buy me a Beer?

i haven't worked on old toyoda's but have used the newer horizontals and love em , I'm all for modifying and or destroying equipment , but that baby is made to eat material and it would be a shame to scrap a machine like that even i it is old . well unless its an anchor and its going to cost a fortune to keep it running ,then it good to strip before you get attached to it

Sorry you didn't get the machine; it looked like a monster. Did you find something you liked instead? You were born to have a machine named hog. Are there photos? Please.
