Harding HLV spindle belt drive rattle and noise

Hello,

my name is Manfred, iḿ from germany and bought a hardinge hlv. The machine seems to be okay but i,m wondering about some rattle noise of the variable speed drive. Left pic shows the machine form back. I tried tighten the motor belt with screw seen on middle pic but it was not successful. The pulley assembly (right pic) is vibrating and also the motor assembling plate while running. Any ideas to solve my problem?

Hello again,

seens that nobody has an idea to solve my problem.
Maybe i found one reason for the vibration in the speed pulley assembly. I removed the belts and now i want to pullout the shaft (blue arrow). The shaft comes out smoothly about 3cm but then it stops. Does anybody know how to demount the shaft? The middle picture shows the outer pulley from the side. There are some screws and maybe i have to unlock them?

Hi Manfred,

The centre pulley bearing is notorious for wearing so i'm sure you're right about the cause of the vibration.

That HLV is quite different from my HLV-H so I'm not sure how much help I can be. (The HLV-H idler is removed by removing a bearing in one side)

Can you remove the whole speed change assembly? It might be easier to get to the pulley.

The whole pulley assembly is supposed to float side-to-side as it moves, so it might have worn the shaft enough to create a burr that is stopping the shaft from moving

However, the diagram of the pulleys is a later model than your HLV and is more like the HLV-H.


P.S. If you haven't already noticed: Hardinge usually lock each grub-screw with a second one in the same hole (so you have to remove the locking screw to loosen the one underneath

Hi Bill,

i hope to find the reason for vibration soon. The inner pulley feel "shaky" by moving it along the shaft. Removing the whole assembly is a good idea, i will try it soon.

The site csparks i found already with its lot of information. It seems that HLV-H information is much easier to get. Until now i was not able to find the serial number and i do not know exactly what machine i have.

I followed Bills advice and removed the speed control unit. Then i was able to
remove the shaft with bolt and hammer. Some rust came out. Maybe demounting the outer and inner pulley(s) wil be not so easy.

Today i took a look on the pulley speed assembly. On the video you can see the
slackness of the inner pulley.

Could anybody give me more information to demount this? I removed the cover on
one side. Now i see the bearing but how to do gettig it out? Maybe i heat the
the outer cylinder to get the bearing out. But iḿ a bit concerned to "set
free inner stress" and concentricity. I added two pictures of the pulley
assembly.
