this works no better than the way we were doing it before. Should I run it at even higher feed and speeds or go back to the old school way. I.
if youve removed the same amount of material as you have at slow speeds before the inserts wear out ,then i would say you are ahead , time is money!
02" chipload/ tooth sounds extreme for aluminum let alone d2 , that takes some serious force to push an insert that heavy , what kind of tooling and equipment are you running , must be huge stuff

your boss needs to understand that it takes money to make money , to request $2000 worth of tools is peanuts , the last company i worked at would push up to $50,000 / month in tooling and holders , and that was only the milling dept
its not too hard to justify buying proper tools for the job , its simple to calculate the difference in time it takes to run a solid carb, drill vs an hss drill etc. etc.

about the big fat raise , i'd say forget about that , it doesn t matter where you work you won t get a raise for saving the company money because more or less thats what we are hired to do

I have found what works best is to have a lot of info on what you need and costs.
If you just tell them i need more tools, they will just tell you we need more money.
Get a list of exactly what you need, the cost, the time saved, the cost to maintain.the current cost with what you have.It has to show profit.
You have to show the bean counters that you know what your talking about.Otherwise your just a regular Joe trying to buy something new at their expense.

When the vendors come in to try and sell you new tools. Ask them if you might demo a tool. It's easy enough on a mazak to tweek the feeds and speeds, for the new tool. Then you might be able to show the boss the time savings, and increased productivity.
