I had some 4340 alloy steel parts around Rc45 with rolled threads.
We subbed out the thread rolling however.
Has anyone ever done any thread rolling on a lathe with parts that are 35 RC or harder. Just quoted a job that they want the threads rolled after hardening. Looking for a rough info on life of the rolls or anything else that would help. I also will be sawing and turning this while its hard too.
Thanks

First you get good, then you get fast. Then grouchiness sets in.

Thats really not that hard at all.
Pretty much any coated tool is going to get you through
material that soft with good life.
It will help the guys if you let them know dias. and also
the type of material your using.

Its a M12 X 1.75 thread and the material is Pyromet Alloy A-286.
Check out Modern Machine Shop magazine - I think it was September, maybe October. You can access it online. The cover story was about thread rolling.
