    Feed/Speed Milling Alum

    I'll be using a .312 Carbide EM, 2 flutes, 1/2" LOC, going 1.75 deep. (Fins for a heatsink).

    I'm starting at 7,000 RPM, feeding at 100 IPM with .075 DOC. That's about a .007 chip load.

    Is the DOC too deep for these feeds? Can I go deeper? (That's a loaded question.. ) Should I speed up the feed and decrease the DOC more?

    I say it looks good as long as the fins are'nt too thin.
    If they are do like you said and decrease d.o.c..

    The fins are .078 wide, 12" long, 9 of them. I'll be doing it by depth, (machining all fins to first depth, then all fins to second depth etc), so that will help with deflection.

    Fired that puppy up today. Sang me a song of happiness and contentment. Who'd of thunk you could run a tool with a length 6xDia at 100 IPM..

    I could prolly run it up to 150 and drop the depth down to .05, but I dont wanna push it too much.

    Just wonderin if this feed rate is what is considered HSM?
    What kind of CNC?
    Do you have more RPM? This is only 572 sfm...
    I imagine though that your tool is hangin out of the holder 1.8"
    So I would be surprised if you got good results.
    I wonder if it would be worth using 2 tools, one stubbed, the next extended...
    T1 could go much, much faster that way. You should be able to go straight (as I imagine a heat sink) real fast say 400 ipm
