Need Help!- Vibration on VF-3 w/pallet changer

We have a 1999 Haas VF-3 with a side loading pallet changer and recently started getting some vibration problems when facemilling or taking a heavy cut. Is there any way to adjust/measure the clamping pressure on the pallet? I bought a service manual but it doesn't give a clue when it comes to the clamping component of the pallet change system.

Are you sure the problem is in the pallet clamping and not the drawbar tension on the toolholder?

I agree, but also take the pallet off and make sure it's clean underneath.

Well, after so examination, we've come to the conclusion that the problem is the linear rails/bearings on the Y-axis. Anyone have any tips on replacing these on a VF-3?

What makes you think its the linear rails?
I only ask as it would be very suprising for these to be worn out.

Actually, the bearings would be the problem but since you have to replace them as a set I just referred to the rails being bad. When you rapid the Y axis the table really vibrates, sort of like its stuttering. Also, if you put a lot of way lube on the rails and then move the table back and forth there will be an oil impression of a bearing about every 1.5 inches.

Does all this add up to bad bearings?

Not really sure what you mean by 'an oil impression of a bearing about every 1.5 inches'.
Have you looked at problems with leadscrew or support bearings or bearing pack? Any one of these could give you the vibrating that you describe.
Also, have you checked y axis servo amp and/or Low Volt Power Supply that feeds servo amps? The amp or the PSu could give you bad vibtrations too.

Check your backlash for X and Y. If this is out you probably have a mechanical issue with either lead screw, lead screw bearings, or motor coupling.
