Toolchanger not working.

Hey folks!

My 1998 VF2 was working fine but now the toolchange has stopped working.

The spindle goes to correct location and orients spindle and the carousel rotates to the tool but it seems the tool goes too far past where it should stop to be picked up.

Are there any adjustments or perhaps a switch or "eye" that is supposed to control the carousel position?

Thanks

Do you mean the shuttle moves "to far" under the spindle ..or that the tool carousel is mis-indexed and rotated too far or too short to be under the spindle??

Both the shuttle and the carousel have limit switches on a 98 model..

The shuttle has two..one for out position(farthest away from the spindle) and one for In position, (under the spindle)..

The carousel has one..but it is only for tool #1 position..It doesn't check each tool position..only tool number #1 when powering up..then the control keeps track of it from there on..

The tool indexing carousel is driven by a gear motor with a wheel that has a pin on it that drives the carousel star wheel... one rev of the gear motor indexed the star on position...

If the problem is mis indexing of the carousel, then my guess is that the gear motor wheel has become loose on the gear motor shaft..

Pull the cover off the front of the umbrella and then there are four bolts holding the gear motor in place..a couple of connectors and it will lift up and out the front..you will then see the wheel..

I'll try that tomorrow.

Problem is with the indexing of the tools and the carousel rotating past the position ition where it is supposed to place the tool for pick up.

Could just be a loose conector..or might be a brush issue..Or even a bad relay on the IO board..

Tool change fault

Ok.
Presumably you will be getting a 'turret rotate fault' when you try to tool change. This could be caused by lots of things. Here are some:

Tool changer relays could be bad - turn off the machine. open electrical cabinet, look for the i/o pcb. this is a board located at bottom left of the electrical cabinet. On the board a couple of inches above the centre of the board should be four clear plastic relays that plug into sockets on the board. From top to bottom they are - shuttle in - then shuttle out - then turret clockwise -then turret counter clockwise. All these relays are exactly the same. Swap the top two for the bottom two. Now restart the machine and see if the fault transfers to a shuttle problem instead of a turret problem. If the problem swaps to shuttle faults then you have a faulty relay.

If not then on the same Board - again with power off. Nearer to the top of the board you should see a couple of large white resistors, they will probably be about an inch and a half to two inches long. Check that these resistors are properly soldered to the board, as sometimes they come loose.

In about the same place is a fuse holder. make sure that the fuse hasn't blown, there should be an orange lamp next to the fuse holder. If this is lit up then the fuse has blown or there is a fault on the board.

If neither of these are the problem then the problem is very probably to do with the turret motor or the limit switches on the turret motor. If you need more info on how to test for this then let me know.

Hope this helps.
