10 month old VF2 has weird spindle noises...

We've purchased a brand new VF-2 that was installed beginning of 09 with under 200 machine hours on it.

Recently I've notice a weird spindle noise during warmup. The noise sounds like something between bearings rubbing improperly and higher pitched gurgling in the head and is most obvious at around 1500 - 2000 RPM.

The noise is still there at 100 RPM but is very subtle and is proportional to the RPM speed of the spindle.

A factory outlet tech came out to check out the machine but havn't fixed it yet because we're waiting on HAAS for a response on the spindle analyzer results, which has been a few days now.

Anybody have any idea on what may be causing the noise?

Edit: Forgot to add, the encoder at the top of the spindle "wobbles" with the spindle running and the noise SEEMS to be coming from there, however the tech said he replaced it with a new one but it didn't fix the problem, so the original one is back in. Is the encoder suppose to wobble even though it is secured?

Buy me a Beer?

No the encoder should not wobble, If they did a vibration check they can tell you right away if the spindle has a problem

My machine has this same problem. You don't even want to hear my horror story with how many gearboxes/tests we went through with it.

Long story short, the factory claims it's because they switched to a cageless bearing in the gearbox. I don't think bearings shouldn't sound like they have sand in them, regardless of their construction, but my HFO doubled the warranty on the new gearbox and I don't see any issues with surface finish/holding tolerance, so I'm not too worried about it.

Make very sure you have as much of the report in writing. I know from our experiences, ( a shop with about 24 Haas), if it's a couple months over warranty, you will be out of luck.

At least if you have the initial report before your warranty ends, you might have a chance to get something repaired.
