    Glacern Machine Tools

Hi Guys, I wanted to make a post here regarding Glacern Machine Tools. I was looking for a fly cutter and saw the GMT ad and good feedback about them here on this forum. I decided I would investigate as their tooling looks very impressive on their site. I emailed Sol and got a reply right away answering all my questions. I decided to buy from it from them. It was shipped the same day and I received it the next day. It is a beautiful piece at an extremely reasonable price. I am very impressed with the product as well as the service. Sol was great. I will definitely buy from them again and can highly recommend them.

I just thought I would post my experience here for any others looking to tool up.

I would like to say, If you live and work in the USA. Try to purchase tools that are also built here in the USA. I know it is difficult to find everything. I have a Haas and drive a Ford, we all know they are not entirely made in the US, but their purchases help the struggling economy we are living in.
    Just my two cents.

I like to if I can too but unfortunately it comes with a higher price tag. Due to the economy I cannot afford it. Its a bit of a catch 22.

I'll have to second the opinion on the Glacern tools. Very nice stuff.

I've not run one at over 8,000 yet so I'm not sure. Running at 8000 I've had no problems.

    Do you machine aluminum?

Do you use cutters smaller than 5/8" diameter?

Why are you going so slow?

If the Glacern holders are not rated for 20,000rpm they should be whipped with a wet noodle; non-balanced holders are soooo last decade.

IIRC I asked and they are balanced to 20K. Why am I going so slow? I'm new! Not sure what the machine or the man is capable of yet!

    Come on, be a man!

Cutters only cost a few tens of dollars and breaking a few will not hurt the machine.

You should be able to drive a 5/8" two flute cutter at 10,000rpm, 0.3" deep, full width at around 100 ipm. Pro-rate this up or down for different sized cutters.

HINT: Somewhere in the Settings there is something about Tool Overload Action (I am not sure about the specific title, a few glasses of wine inhibits good memory recall ). The choices are; Alarm, Feedhold or Adjust Feed (Or something like that.) I choose the Adjust Feed and then set a spindle load of 120% in the page that is under Current Commands that gives you the choice for spindle load for each tool. This way if you overdo things the machine backs off on the feed when the spindle load goes above 120%.

    Gentlemens:

Does anyone here have one of the Glacern vices? They sure look pretty in the pictures, but it would be good to get a field report.

    Thanks,

    Glenn
