Y axis groans with slow feed ?

I cant tell if its the way covers are dry ?
or the bed or ballscrews ... it only does it on one spot ..

the slower the feed goes the louder it is ..

the load meter looks fine never higher than 17 percent

There is a 800 lbs trunnion on the mill ...

any input ?

Sounds like a ball screw. Put a indicator on it at the position it is groaning and you will probably find there is some backlash there or will see vibration on your indicator. we had a Okuma LC40 and the lower turret Z ball screw lube system got pluged. It groaned!
Mitch.

We had the same issue, a groaning at slow speeds, except we had the noise in the x-axis. The machine is a horizontal milltronics (HMC35).

We took the way covers off and found that one of the lube lines was disconnected and the ways were dry.

We reconnected the lines and the noise has been gone ever since.

Had a problem with a dirty tach once. Pencil eraser cleaned it up!

waycover

Throw some Vac 2 on the cover and see if it changes. Worry about the hard stuff after you have eliminated the easy stuff.

If the problem is not ways or ball screws, check the axis motor brushes. a hung brush will still allow the drive to run but it'll make a lot of noise and feed unevenly at low speeds. It's not good for the drive either. I found this the hard way.

There are only a few screws holding the covers on. Take the screws out, slide the covers out of the way and eliminate the really simple problem first. I reccomend cleaning everything off first.

hey Brad,as mentioned today i am having similiar issues but in the y axis,i purchased a new grease gun today, with flex hose fitting and i must not have been getting any grease in the system with the other gun because it was a night and day difference in pushing the grease into the fitting instead of all around it.

my y axis is still groaning but i think that has something to do with the recent ball cover replacement and constant spraying of the guides to clean the chips from under the way covers.
