Haas Noob!

Hi peeps!

So I've gone over to the dark side and bought this. My other machines are Milltronics and Makino and they are both very good machines but a little old and not enclosed like this.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...:X:AAQ:US:1123

If any of you have advice for someone new to Haas I'd appreciate whatever help I can get. I've never used the control so any weird stuff I need to know that I won't find in the manual?

Also, any maintenance and upgrading tips would be nice. How to upgrade part memory etc. Can you upgrade to 1000 bps? How are they for accuracy at high feeds? What is fastest feed?

Thanks!

This should be a great machine for you. The control is easy to understand. This site is great for getting you started. Take some time to review the manuals and learn how Haas does things instead of trying to make it work like your other machines. Read other new Haas users threads here and you will do fine.

You will probably find it all in the manual, just difficult to find and sometimes presented in a less-than-clear manner.

I have only run Haas machines so I cannot give a direct comparison. However, over the years reading posts here I have come to the conclusion that on just about any other machine you need to use several button pushes to do something that on a Haas needs one button on the control.

This also carries over into programs: For a tool change on a Haas you simply code Tn M06 and the machine does everything; retracting from whatever Z position it is at, stopping the spindle, turning off the coolant and then doing the change.

Setting Tool Offsets is another; this is a single key push when the Offset Screen is open in Handle Jog mode, although sometimes you do have to make sure the cursor is on the correct line.

I am aso new to HAAS as of a few months ago, welcome aboard . You will find a great group of guys here willing to help out . Once I stopped trying to make the controller operate like the fanuc and Centurion controllers on my other equip I found the HAAS controller to be very well layed out . They have spent a huge amount of time designing and laying things out for ease of use by the operator .

My other machines are Milltronics and an 82 Makino with 6mb control. I'm looking forward to being able to feed much faster than either of those machines. I see there is a command to tell the machine to slow down on corners which seems like a nice feature. Through spindle coolant will be nice too.

Haas Software - Easy??

I had ran several machines and softwares (i.e. Mazak - Mazatrol, PC Fusion, Matrix - Heller - UniPro80 & 90 - Mori Seiki, Okuma, Brother TC series, Mitsubishi Softwares, Fanuc 0i, 16i, 21i, Gleason Cutter, Tester and Lapper, Anca Grinder, Fanuc Robotics, Siemens, etc.) before knowing Haas (I knew it by the web, only).
Well, the fact is that I had a small shop (with only 1 CNC Lathe and a mill), but due to many reasons I went bankruptcy and God put HFO on my way, with the opportunity to be Application Technician (free lancer). The first time I needed to TEACH Haas software to a customer, I've never even seen it in front of me. All I knew was the pictures and descriptions I've found at Operator's Manual.
Now, 6 months later, I can assure you there's no software more friendly to the user than Haas is and no Rotary Systems so fast to install and use to.

Thank you all for choosing Haas Automation (and contribute to the fair machine prices policy, to)!!

The only real difference that I can think of is that the manual was written so it's easy to understand. I've been the one to learn new machines in the shop, Matsuuras, Nakamuras, Stars, Okumas, Haas, and one other one I can't recall. While I am a fan of ALL those machines, the Haas was the easiest to pick up. They all have their idiosyncrasies (yes, I did have to look up that word to spell it, LOL) but the manuals for the Haas beat out all the others.

Good to hear

Apparently it will arrive this week so hopefully it will fit under the 7ft door of my garage ok. Otherwise its Sawzall time!! I had to cut the front out of garage when I put the Makino in but I don't feel like moving that 12000 lb monster out of the doorway where I left it to get the Haas in so I'll have to try the other door.

You can also type the tool number and press the ATC FDW button. No need to mdi

Ok!

Got the machine installed and my first problem is that it won't perform any commands as it says the door is open. How do I overide that?

Setting 51, door hold over ride.

Go to the setting page and type 51 and then press down arrow.
