I'm looking into getting another Haas mill. I want something pretty big (around VF8 size). My biggest question is whether to go with a high speed (15k rpm) machine or not. I cut a lot of steel -4340 and I'd love to go faster, but I'm not actually sure I can even if I have high speed. Any input? Thanks, Manoj |

| A lot depends on how you create your programming. With new designed TiALN coated Carbide end mills and programming with SurfCam's TrueMill, you can make use of the higher RPM and Feeds in steel. Take a look at Surfware.com videos fast and smooth. I don't have a fast machine yet but hope to soon. I have been able to benefit from this technology even with an older Haas. Good Luck Eagle |

| If you aren't sure of everything you will be making, then get as much machine as you can. You can't add it later (as easily...). I have the 12k spindle and often times would love more speed. I cut mostly aluminum and acrylic and delrin, though, on this machine. I would suggest tsc as a must have. (I didn't on my newest machine and kick myself). Also - get the probes. Most new software will support highspeed style programming. Mastercam is excellent with it also. The most critical, though, is the surface speeds you need, and it sounds like you need to look at the tooling you use. If you do just mainly cut alloy steels, and are typically cutting with 1/8" tools or larger, then you don't need 15k. 10k would be more than fine. |
