My boss just ordered a TM 1P. CNC milling is a totally new world. We have an old Bridgeport, and a 10 month old Haas SL 30 lathe. Can anyone reccomend a basic starter package of toolholders etc. to pre order for the new mill? Is there a general preference of one type of collet flange over another? Any and all input will be appreciated! Thanks ahead of time Chris |

| You can figure on adding 7-10K for tooling up a mill. I would recommend ER 16 and ER 32 collet holders If your tool holder holds ten tools then I would have about 15 collet chucks of various lengths and a full set of collet chucks for each ER size plus two to three extra collets in the most common size that you use. ie. 2 extra ER16 1/4", 5/16", 3/8" and 1/2" in ER32 and 1/8", 1/4" 5/16" and 3/8" in ER16. A good 0-1/2" drill chuck, a couple of face mill tools, two D675 KURT Vises, a slitting saw arbor, and some Weldon setscrew tool holders for the largers cutters lik 5/8", .75", 1", 1.125" and 1.25". Take a look on Ebay for some tool packages and the vises. Good Luck Eagle Added: You will want all your tooling as short as possible to get the job done. Thus the variation on collet chucks. Collets are more accurate than set screw tool holders so your products are easier to keep in tolerance. I would also suggest that you buy and learn SurfCam for your programming. It's TrueMill feature is worth the cost if you are trying to make money with your machine.IMHO Eagle Last edited by lkenney; 12-20-2008 at 08:33 AM. |

| I started out with 6 ER-32 collet chucks, 3 ER-16 collet chucks, one keyless drill chuck, one 2.5" face mill, and a 1" end mill holder for my VF-1 I now have: 9 ER-32 collet chucks 14 ER-16 collet chucks 1 Keyless drill chuck 1 Milling chuck 1 1.0" End mill holder 2 0.75" End mill holders 1 0.625" End mill holder 2 0.500" End mill holders 2 0.375" End mill holders 2 0.250" End mill holders 1 0.1875" End mill holder Sure wish I had gotten the side mount toolchanger... 20 sounds like a lot, but there's at least 24-25 tools I'd like to keep in the machine permanently. |

| The kurt d688's fit nicer on the toolroom mill than the d675's especially if you have the way cover on the z axis. The 688's don't have anything that protrudes from the front of the vise when fully closed like the 675's do. The kurt speed handle also fits without hitting anything. good luck and have fun with the new toy. |

I have a 2008 TM-1P. I have 3 D688 vises installed. The hex that sticks out the front of the vise is too long and will hit the door so be careful and manually check out the vise mounting prior to bolting them down. I cut about 3/4 to 1 inch???? off the 3/4 Hex that is used for tightening the vise. Also, I don't use the handles supplied with the vises. If you accidently leave one in the vise you can say good by to those nice doors on the enclosure. I purchased some combination end wrenches and straightened them out so they would hang straight down. Cut the open end wrench end off with a die grinder and placed some heat shrink on the wrench handle as a cushion. Then I put an 3/4 inch "O" Ring around the hex to keep the wrench in place. Just some information that may be helpful. John |

| An alternate method is to make an extended handle that prevents the door on the machine closing; that way you cannot start it which the handle on the vise. Unless you are foolish enough to turn Setting 51 ON and forget the handle.

| er 16 and 32's are a must but i would also get a few er 11's as they work well for small drills and end mills if you do any kind of small work. a few end mill adapters would also be good being you cant always use collets |

| I like the ER20 ER32 TG100 I started my shop 7 months ago and made the mistake and bought 3 import tools and collets not nearly as good as name brand tools when it comes to runout.ent I found teknics tools to good investment. good luck |
