hey guys, so as to not hijack the crash probe thread I thought I would start another one. How many of you guys with probes are using the styli from mcmaster carr? I was under the impression from another thread about a year ago that they were much more rigid in that they dont break away as easily as the renishaw ones (I am not sure if that matters or not). I broke one a long tome ago and bought 2 more from Haas so I would have one as a backup. That was a hit (around $200). On the battery note. Ebay is an amazing resource. I think I bought 6 of them for $24. When I had to replace both the table and probe batteries about a week ago I was so happy I had bought them. Thanks Greg, I got that from a post you made a long time ago. Mark |

| Fortunately, I have not broken a styli yet, I'm sure I will in the future. I would be a little wary of using a styli with a higher pressure yield point. It's probably a good bet that the OEM yield point is set up to protect the attachment mechanism. There is always some over engineering built into these situations but neither Renishaw nor Haas will ever release the numbers so you will have to experiment on your own. Let us know how you do. ![]() Vern |

| I still have a back up but if I did need to buy another one I dont think I would go the Mcmaster Carr route. I dont think I would want to risk damaging the probe body to save 40 or 50 dollars. It is a bummer to shell out $100 for a tip though. I was just wondering if any of you guys had the stones to try it. Mark |

| Cory, thanks for clarifying that. Maybe McMaster isn't such a good choice. I've been very, very careful about my probe since breaking that first tip (the first night). I haven't broken one since. That price is a brutal teacher.

Same here. I had one oopsie moment when I was handle jogging the probe into position and somehow bumped the jog lock button before pressing z-. Crunched the tip before I even realized what was happening. Ever since then I always make sure I press z+ instead of z- |
