Stupid newb question (please help)

I've run into a problem in my program that I just can't figure out and I have a feeling that it's something stupid that I'm overlooking. I get a program error of tool is to large when it comes to this line of code,

G13 G91 I.255 K.570 Q.200 F20.0 Z-.124 L5 D01

The tool is a .500 end mill, and that value is in the offset menu.

What am I doing wrong?

on a side note (unrelated) I have been getting an error code of 144 machine will stop functioning in 43 hours... what the hell is this?

To answer your last query first:

Haas machines have a time out feature at 800 hours so that if you have not kept up with your lease or finance payments the machine will stop running.

I do not know why they cannot turn it off when you pay cash in full for a machine but they do not; all my machines had this alarm.

Just contact your dealer or Haas with the machine serial number and they will give you a code that turns off the time out.

First query:

Tool to big message means you have Tool Compensation active and you have programmed a move that is too small, i.e. less than the tool radius. I am not completely familiar with G13 but it could be your Q value at 0.200. Try changing this to .251 and run Graphics to see if it fixes it.

Cool that makes me feel much better, I had no idea what that ment.

As far as the code goes, from the Haas manual

D=tool radius or diameter selection
I= radius of first circl(or finish if no K) The I value must be greater than the tool radius, but less than the K value
K= radius of the finish pocket (if specified)
L= loop count for repeating deeper cuts
Q= radius increment, or stepover(must be used with K)
F=feedrate
Z-depth of cut

I and Q must be less than the tool diameter.

Their example is
G13I0.3K1.5Q.03F10.0 Z-1.2D01

I'm just running this in dryrun mode with the graph and the lines of code on the side to see where the program stops. What really gets me is I have almost the identical line of code (N4581 G13 G91 I.255 K.560 Q.100 F10.0 Z-.106 L5 D01) in another program that I just ran and it works fine.

When I think about it a bit your problem may not be in the G13 line it may be further down.

I have found that sometimes the line that is highlighted when the program stops is not the line with the error; the error is further down the program and the control has found it in look-ahead.

Check your code further down and look for things like missing G01 commands after a G12, G13, G02 or G03. These can generate a tool to big message sometimes.

When I first started using tool compensation I used to tear my hair because the error messages are so obscure. Eventually I got things straight.

Do you mean that you have .25 in the offset menu?

No I have .500, the offset screen asks for actual diameter.

Just asking. I use a Cam system now but when I did code by hand and used G13 on a Matsuura, it wanted just the radius. I haven't used G13 on our Haas yet. So all my offsets are set to zero , then adjusted from there.

I use CAM as well so this is just a guess as it's been awhile since I used G13. Try taking out the G91 (or substitue it with G90) and see what happens.

Ditto.

Tomorrow morning I will take the program and run it on my Haas Simulator. It has to be something simple.

Incidentally to save typing you could put all the G13 lines in a subroutine and call it after every X move. Also makes editing easier because you only need to edit one line.

I tried but it gave the error message; 'Invalid I, K or Q in G12 or G13.'

So I gave up, sorry.
