It must. I changed pit202's design minimally. Almost all exterior dimensions are identical.

Slapped it on the spindle last night, ran a toolchange at 5% rapid. Smashed right into the adjacent tool. When eyeballed beforehand everything looked like it would clear. After measuring the center-center distance between tools in the carousel and modeling up a CT-40 holder and the correct center-center distance from the coolant ring, it looks like there's no way in hell it can ever fit. It intersects the taper of the tool for ~2" of the length of the ring. It would have to be ~1.5" to clear by the measurements we took.

nice, we made a simple 4 position t/c like your first one u put on yt.
but i like this new 1 even better!
was the new 18 station hard to interface to the mill?
did u design it as u went, or worked from plans?
great work

HELLO, JUST CAME ACROSS THIS THREAD TODAY AND THOUGHT I LEAVE A MARK.

I'VE BEEN A FREELANCE PROGRAMER FOR SOME TIME AND HAVE ALWAYS PUSHED THE HAAS EQUIPMENT TO MY CUSTOMERS WHEN THEY ARE LOOKING FOR A NEW MACHINE. I HAVE A TM-2 OF MY OWN, AND USE IT TO DO BASIC SMALL PRODUCTION RUNS. A FEW YEARS AGO I DESIGNED EXACTLY WHAT PETER HAS MADE AND HAVE BEEN USING IT ON MY MACHINE FOR A FEW YEARS NOW. I HAVE SOLD A FEW HERE AND THERE TO THE SHOPS THAT HAVE TO ALWAYS STICK THERE ARMS IN TO REPOSITION THE NOZZLES FOR EACH TOOL. I EVEN SOLD ONE TO A GUY WHO HAD THE PROGRAMABLE COOLANT OPTION INSTALLED AND LOVED THE FACT THAT HE DIDNT HAVE TO SET EACH BEFORE-HAND, AND STILL GOT EFFECTIVE FLOOD COOLING TO HIS TOOLS.

I FIND IT FUNNY THAT I HAD THE SAME PROBLEMS AS PETER AT FIRST, AND BELIEVE MY IF I WOULD HAVE FOUND THIS BEFORE HAND I WOULD HAVE TOLD YOU WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT. I HAD TO FIRST BUMP UP MY STOCK TANK TO A 21 GALLON AFTERMARKET ONE, SINCE SIZE OF THE MACHINE CAN EMPTY IT PRETTY FAST. THEN I TOSSED THE PUMP THAT CAME WITH THAT AND THREW ON A 10 GPM WITH 3/8 HOSE CONNECTING IT ALL TO THE SPINDLE. I INSTALLED A CHECK VALVE ON THE INLET BY THE SPINDLE AND ALSO HOOKED UP A HAND VALVE INCASE I ONLY WANTED TO USE MY LOCLINES.

AS FAR AS DESIGN GOES, I MAKE MINE OUT OF BLACK DELRIN AND USE ONLY THE O-RINGS TO HOLD THE HOUSING TO THE SPINDLE(SOUNDS RISKY, BUT I PROOVED IT ON A VF-4 FOR HOURS STRAIGHT SEVERAL TIMES). IT HAS FIVE NOZZLES AND FITS IN MY TOOLCHANGER WITHOUT A PROBLEM. I DESIGNED TO TO HAVE MINIMUL (BUT SAFE) CLEARANCE WHEN INSIDE OF THE CARASOUL. ALSO I BRING THE NOZZLES DOWN FLUSH WITH THE BASE OF THE SPINDLE. I THEN PLACE THE NOZZLES AS FAR OUTWARD AS POSSIBLE TO ACHIEVE A BETTER ANGLE TO GET AT THE SMALLER PROJECTED HOLDERS AS WELL.

I AM NEW TO POSTING, BUT I WILL TRY TO GET PICTURES AND VIDEO UP OF MY VERSION WHEN I CAN.

MY HAT GOES OFF TO YOU PETER, AND EVERYONE ELSE MAKE SIMILAR IDEAS FOR HAVING THE SAME DRIVE AS I, AND LOOKING FOR WAYS TO IMPROVE OUR EQUIPMENT.

The angular spacing, and of course straight line distance, between tools in a 20 tool carousel is closer than the 10 tool carousel; that could be the difference.

Dave,

I'm curious to see your pictures, as by my mental math/ the CAD mockup we did of the toolholder's taper and the ring on the spindle, the clearances involved make it look impossible to not hit the tapers of the adjacent toolholders if the coolant ring is flush with the base of the spindle.

I would never steal Peter's thunder (Pit202) , as he and I are friends and if it weren't for his ingenuity I would not have even thought of this idea. I designed my own coolant ring. I own a TM-3 with the carousel changer. I designed mine to fit. Use it every day. You have to be extremely diligent with the dimensions due the the obvious clearance issue and Peter's design does not allow that. I have been asked by my local HFO to start making them for sale. Seems too easy to make to seriously consider it. If I keep seeing people struggle with the design I just may consider it.... ;-)

I have a feeling the TM tool changer has more spacing between tools, because this doesn't just not fit by a little, it doesn't fit by a mile.

Again I think that is because you used Peter's design. I didn't say that it only missed a little, I knew that it would not work. It was beautiful to look at, and he is in Poland so a tool changer was never an option for him (Peter, I will let you correct me here ;-) ) You need to re-think the design. Start by removing 1 tool and E-Stopping at the bottom stroke of the empty tool change with two tools still straddling the empty tool pocket. That way you can measure your clearances. It works, I promise......

no , it wasn`t , just plug the cables , all around that are my plans and ideas , some parts could be done ( design ) better , but at the end it is still a prototype , a working one , and thats count for me ;-)
