| I enabled Rigid tapping in the 57 screen (not sure the correct name for this). I am on a 200 hour trial, so the 0T went to a 1. So it is on... I tried using the hole drill tab in the standard screen of hole drilling. I did a single hole and set the tools up, using 1)center drill 2)#7 drill bit 3) 1/4-20 tap (no coolant) I ran the program and it ran fine. Tried it again and it snapped my tap bit. I noticed in the program code that it goes all the way through (.5") and doesn't turn around anytime between it. (I think it was using a G89 or so) It seems the tap is getting gunked up on the way down. My feed rate is auto calculated, and my rpm was set to 100 RPM. Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thanks guys! |

| Are you using coolant? The tap may 'gunk' up without coolant. You have Rigid Tapping turned on. Do you have Repeat Rigid Tapping also turned on. You are going very slow. I tap at 1000 rpm in aluminum and hot rolled steel up to 1/2"-13 and have found the machine maintains better synchronization at this speed. Actually my Super MiniMill will not do it at 100 rpm it just stutters.

Hi dapoopta, I too have a new HAAS TM-1P. I have experimented a little with rigid tapping during my trial period. You can turn rigid tapping on and off to save your hours. I have attached a little check off sheet that I made to help me remember all the necessary steps. Thought it might be useful to you. John |

| Dapoopta, Try checking setting 130 - tap retract speed. This setting allows the operator to speed up the retract speed of the tap. If the tap is programmed for a feed of 5.0 ipm and the setting is set to 4 the retract speed will be 4 times the programmed speed or 20.0 ipm and so on. We had a problem with this, Haas defaults is 4 times the programmed feed. Once we changed the setting to 1 no more broken taps. By the way, 5.0 ipm is what you should be running with an rpm of 100 for a 1/4-20 tap. Is that what you had? Also agree with Geof, lots of coolant. Galling is a taps worst enemy. Good Luck |
