TM3-P

I recived my TM3-P mill a couple of weeks ago, my question is at 500 rpm the spindle load is 12% and at 6000 rpm it is 28% this is without a tool holder in the spindle. this seems high to me I was wondering what some of your tm's are running for spindle load

There are two programs on the machine; O02020 Warm Up and O02021 Run In.

These programs are intended to run the spindle up to speed in a series of steps to purge out the oil that accummlates in the lower spindle bearing when the machine is not operating.

The Run In program should have been done when the machine was installed and checked out by the Haas technician and the Warm Up should be done every day if the machine gets cold overnight or if the machine has not been used for a couple of days.

Have you been using the machine or has it been sitting unused, how cold is your shop, have you been running the Warm Up program. It is possible to get a high spindle load when the machine is cold simply because it is stirring up oil in the bearings. It is also possible to overheat the spindle but this is less likely on a 6000rpm machine.

The TM's spindle is grease lubricated, no oil, no pump. Warm up is always a good idea but oil accumulation should not be a significant issue. I'll fire mine up in a couple hours and get back with some readings.

Oh, I had read somewhere that the 6000rpm spindle in the 'P's was the same as the MiniMill and just assumed it was oil lubricated like the Minis. That is fastish for grease lubrication but it does explain the high spindle load.

My TM-1P is a year old and I would estimate one to two hours usage per day average.

After a 20 hour cool off:
1000rpm 3-4% ran for 5 minutes
3000rpm 3-4% ran for 5 minutes
6000rpm 6-7%

You may have a problem.

Thumbs up

The spindle load will go down as your belt on the machine gets broken-in.

I just checked on a new Mini Mill and TM-1P ... they both are running at 6000RPM with a spindle load of 34%
