TM-1 Harmonic noise on "Y" Axis

Tried the search, but came up empty.
I removed the Y axis handwheel, and get a harmonic noise, no matter the speed of the Y axis. I made a bushing to take the place of the wheel, same noise. RE-installed the handle, noise gone. Is the Handwheel some sort dampner by chance.
I removed the handwheel so my vise handles don't get caught by the wheel, and I don't really want to cut the handles.
Any ideas,
Smitty

Can't you just pop the caps and take the knobs off the handwheels? I'm already looking at that on my TL-1.

They've shortened the knobs on the latest version of the TL-1 (and probably the TM-1 as well) but they still stick out enough to whack you if you aren't paying attention.

It sounds like it is acting as a damper but I don't think it is intended for that. I have a TL1 and the Z axis would oscillate a bit during a rapid and after I took the handwheel off that went away.

I think you just change the response characteristics of the system when you remove the handle; the inertia is now different.

There are parameters than can be adjusted: Parameter 267 Y SWITCH B; Y P GAIN, Y D GAIN, Y I GAIN and also Y ACCEL FEED FORWARD (I think). I had a new MiniMill and these had to be adjusted by the Haas Tech to stop the X axis oscillating. I don't know the details but maybe someone will post more information.

Like Geof said the parameters can be adjusted to compensate. We had that problem on one of our TM-1s, called Haas tech support and told them what it was doing and they told me the same thing as Geof said about the Parameter values. I read them the current values and they told me what to change and it fixed it. Give them a call they'll be glad to help.
