No, not really; just a vacation with poor access to the web and not a lot of free time from sightseeing. Eleven days travelling from Prague to Budapest along the River Danube. It is nice being semi-retired.

And I have to admit to getting swelled head knowing that my absence was noticed.

Figured I would bring this one to the surface to warn Vern of an upcoming absence and realised he has been abducted. Yoo Hoo Vern

Going back to the river Danube are you? I was semi retired as well but lately it has not felt that way. I had probing installed a month ago and have spent a lot of time trying to learn how to apply all the neat stuff this system will do. It's a lot more than a work offset and tool height setter, although it does these two functions very fast and very accurately.

I also got the Millathe up and running, thanks to a lot of help from fellows on this forum. This weekend I will take the time to post about it on the thread I started several months ago. Some of you will be amazed to hear that I hand coded the whole thing, what a depressing experience that was! I plan on posting the code on the forum as well so everyone can take shots at it and hopefully make suggestions.

Goef, I hope I can get this done before you get back on the boat.

Vern

What is so amazing about hand coding the whole thing? Over the past eight byears I have hand coded about 1400 programs. Of course I had a vested interest in doing it because these are what make the money that allows me to goof off starting April 4 on a cruise from New York to Rome. Getting back to the real world April 22. Chances are I will have internet accees on ths ship, they all have it these days. Like I said, nice to be semi-retired.

Hand coding 1400 programs is certainly amazing, especially when one considers the ready availability of multiple CAD/CAM programs.

My use of the term amazing was a reference to my overcoming my previously stated reluctance to do much more then drill a hole without simulating the operation in my CAM program. I guess I was giving myself a back handed complement.

I'll get the millathe program up before you leave for the coliseum. I don't want you to be distracted while making your eagerly anticipated critique.

Cool Hand coding?

At least hand coding works almost the first time.
You get pretty good at it, but single step gets screwed by subprograms, at least for me.

You may have read the acrimonious discussions I have had on this topic . For CAM you need CAD so I would have had to learn both, and that would have taken longer than learning hand coding. In addition for parts that are possible to hand code the programs run faster; in production work even a few seconds can make a big difference.

No, not the Danube this time.

Friday, April 4, fly to New York. Saturday, board Holland America cruise ship. Monday, Bermuda. A few days later, Funchal, Madiera Islands. Then Casablanca, Lisbon, Barcelona, Monaco and Rome (and maybe some I have forgotten). Fly Rome to London, then London to Vancouver arriving back on the 22nd or 23rd. Maybe I should get a picture of me dressed for Formal Dining and post it in the What Do You Look Like thread.

Crossing fingers that no catastrophes strike the business.

I will probably be in email contact from the ship anyway, they have satellite connections; modern technology is wonderful.

As a reluctant traveler these days my information could be outdated but you should have your turn at the Captains table (assuming you did not book passage in steerage).

For this you may be required to dress formally. A picture would be most appropriate (with the Mrs.) next to the Captain, champaign glass prominently displayed. Doing the rabbit ears trick behind the Captains head will be frowned upon.

Enjoy yourself, we will muddle through until your return.

I don't rate Captain's table, the best I have done was the Pilot on an Alaska cruise and the Hotel Manager on a trans-Atlantic.

I can do the formal dress and even have a tuxedo for really spiffy occasions although Holland America only gets a sombre business suit.

I will try to do a picture, although it will just be me most likely. And nowhere near as casual as the ones I did put in the What Do You Look Like thread about a year ago.
